TOK Truth

Today we will be talking about truth. Firstly we will define the word truth using our personal definitions, then dictionary ones and then watching a short Ted-Ed lesson. We will also discuss if there is one truth and if it is easy to find the truth in todays world. We will use TED talk by Markham Nolan as an example.

After that we will discuss truth tests and play 2 truths and a lie. Fun or not?

WOK Talk

Today we are going to play WOK Talk on TOK lesson. Yesterday my students were writing essays on ways of knowing and today I want them to have a little fun and play with them finding connections and practising their oral discussion skills. It is an activity taken from the TOK Course Companion by Oxford Pub. For each round you need a time keeper, a speaker and a judge. Each 3 of students gets a pile of 8 Woks. The speaker draws 2 WoKs and has 20 sec of prep time and 1 min of speaking time on how they interact. The speaker needs to speak non stop and give as many examples from AoK and personal knowledge as possible but also explain how they help or hinder one another. The judge marks the speaker and can award him up to 10 points (2 for every connection and example, one for speaking non stop and one extra for being lively or funny). The judge has 20 seconds to award the points. After that all participants of the group can add additional ideas for another minute and the turn for being a speaker goes left. Should be fun!

12 angry men

Today we were watching “12 angry men”. Students had a worksheet and needed to spot the ways of knowing used when justifing the case. Next week we will discuss it and sum up all the ways of knowing we discussed this semester. After the Christmas break we will write an essay and discuss truth.

Faith and reason in science

Today we defined faith and discussed why we cannot talk about having a belief in science. I devided students into 3 groups and gave each one a text. They were supposed to discuss it and present it on a poster later on.


Today we started to talk about reasoning. We reminded ourselves about 2 types of reasoning – inductive and deductive. We discussed premisses, conclusions and sylogisms. We also thought about why reason is considered the most important way of knowing. At the end we watched a great TED talk:
